How to protect your home while on vacation

Heading out of town for Memorial Day weekend? Got big summer vacation plans? Here are a few simple tips to keep your home safe while you’re away.

1. Don’t be social: DON’T post on Facebook or other social media that you’ll be heading out of town (that goes for your kiddos too). This is a quick way to let robbers know the coast is clear for them to move in (and move out your valuables).

Equally important, make it look like you’re still home:

2. Lights: Leave a light on or use a timer so the light comes on in the evening. Better yet, use a varied schedule so it’s less obvious that you’re using a timer (there’s an app for that).

3. Deliveries: Ask a neighbor to keep an eye out and bring in your paper and any packages, remove anything stuck to your door (package delivery notices, flyers, etc), etc.

4. Garage: Make sure your garage is secure. Even if they can’t get in the house, there are plenty robbers can steal just from your garage!

5. Hidden keys: We hate to burst your bubble, but burglars know about the key under the mat routine. Make sure any obvious hidden keys are safely stowed away inside (or with you). Consider giving well-hidden keys to trusted neighbors or friends.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention…

6. Security system: Set your security system before you go. Even if it’s not monitored, it can still frighten off robbers. If it is monitored, let your alarm company know you’ll be out of town.

7. Doors & windows: Make sure all of your doors & windows are locked.

8. Valuables: Make sure no valuables are visible from a window. Put jewelry, extra cash and other small valuables in a safe deposit box.

Other practical advice:

9. Prevent power surges: Turn off your electronics & disconnect them or make sure they’re plugged safely into a surge protector.

10. Thermostat: Set your thermostat to more moderate levels to conserve electricity.

11. Pipes: For winter travel, make sure all your pipes are properly insulated.

Have more advice or personal stories to add? We want to know!!

We hope you have safe travels this summer!

Until next time,
